This post is dedicated to my mother, Audrey, who is 90 years young. She knows a little about what I do all day at my computer, but she does not understand the concept of an eBook. She is not alone.
People of a certain age have difficulty grasping the thought of an electronic book. So when I told my mother I had purchased a book for her for Mother’s Day, you can imagine her disappointment when I gave her a folder with 50 printed pages. She wanted to know where her book was. This led to a lengthly discussion of traditional books versus eBooks, trees versus electrons, and why the words printed on the page are more important than the package they are presented in. I did not go into the discussion of 10% profit versus 98% profit, but that is the true beauty of an eBook.
I guess the point of this post is that you must consider your target audience when you write an eBook. If your market prefers a physical book to receive your information, it may be next to impossible to convince them that your eBook caontains the exact same content.
So what did I do to make this right with my mother? While the ham and potatoes were cooking, I slipped out of the house and drove over to Barnes and Noble. I was back home in 15 minutes with her ‘real book’. Happy Mother’s Day to all of my readers around the globe, even if it isn’t Mother’s Day today in your part of the world.
