From Local to Global: How Serving My Community Helped Me Build a Worldwide Online Business
When I first started my online business… I thought success meant mastering technology — building the perfect website, writing great content, learning about search engine optimization (SEO) and figuring out how to get noticed online. Like most new entrepreneurs, I believed visibility was something you earned on the internet. But looking back now, I realize… my visibility didn’t begin online at all. It began in my local community. I’ll share here how I went from local to global by serving my community.
It started the day I joined Rotary, an international service organization with Rotary Clubs in thousands of cities and hundreds of countries around the world.
I still remember walking into that first Rotary meeting.
I didn’t know a single person.
I didn’t have a plan. I wasn’t there to talk about my business or hand out business cards.
I was there because I wanted to serve. I wanted to connect with people who cared about something bigger than themselves.
At first, I felt a little out of place. Everyone seemed to know each other — they had their routines, their inside jokes, even their songs! Click HERE to listen to a group of Rotarians singing “Is It the Truth?”.
But I decided to stay, and a few months later I joined as a full-fledged member. I volunteered for a small project, then another. And before I knew it, I was helping organize events, speaking up at meetings, and making real connections and building relationships with people who wanted to make a difference. That’s when I learned something that completely changed my perspective on business: Visibility doesn’t come from trying to be seen; It comes from showing up to serve.
The Turning Point
As time went on, people began asking me what I did for a living. When I explained that I was building an online business, their eyes lit up. They wanted to know more — how I did it, how they could do it, too. And in my explaining what I did as an online entrepreneur, I became more clear about it myself. I was asked to speak at an upcoming meeting, and that turned me into a public speaker.
Without even realizing it, I had become visible — not because I was promoting myself, but because I was earning trust. People notice when you show up early, stay late, lend a hand, and give without expecting anything in return. Those quiet moments of service built my reputation far more powerfully than any ad or social post ever could.
The Ripple Effect
The amazing thing about serving your local community is that it never stays local for long.
One person I met through Rotary introduced me to another organization.
That led to a speaking invitation.
That talk led to a podcast interview…
and soon I was being invited to share my message with people across the country — and eventually, around the world.
Rotary is a global network of Clubs, and through it I met people from every corner of the planet who shared that same heart for service.
And here’s what’s beautiful — they didn’t just see me as a businessperson.
They saw me as someone they could trust.
And that’s the foundation of everything that came after.
The Lesson
I went in thinking I was there to help others… but the truth is, I was the one who was being helped.
I learned how to communicate more clearly, how to listen more deeply, and how to connect more authentically.
And I realized something profound:
you don’t have to shout to be heard.
You just have to care enough to show up.
From Local to Global
Every stage of my business — from blogging and teaching to mentoring and speaking internationally — grew out of that same principle.
Start small. Serve deeply. Let the ripples carry your message outward.
My online presence became global because it was rooted in something genuine and local.
People shared my name, my work, my story — because they had experienced my heart.
I have traveled with and because of Rotary to Canada, Italy, the UK, Mexico, and Thailand over the years, and each experience was a life-changing one for me.
So if you’re listening to this and you’re building your own online business — maybe you’re a writer, a course creator, or a coach — I have a challenge for you…
Before you try to become visible everywhere, become valuable somewhere.
Join a service organization whose Mission resonates with you. Volunteer at a local event. Offer your time and skills to causes that matter to you. Because visibility that begins with service expands far beyond what you can plan or predict. That’s how it happened for me — one handshake, one conversation, one small act of service at a time. And before I knew it, my message — and my business — had reached people all around the world, going from local to global.
Service is the doorway to connection. Connection builds trust. And trust is the foundation of every successful business.
So if you want to grow your reach, your income, and your impact…don’t start by shouting louder online. Start by showing up — right where you are. Because when you serve locally, the world begins to take notice. I’m living proof of that. And I know you can be successful with what I am sharing with you here, too.
If this story inspired you, take one small action this week. Find a way to serve. Because visibility doesn’t start on the internet — it starts with intention, kindness, and connection.
