Over the past fourteen years I have established myself as a credible authority on the topics of authorship, online marketing strategies, affiliate marketing, and more. You can do the same in your own area of expertise.
Take a look at my books:
The word authority is defined as the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience. Additional definitions include a person or organization having power or control in a particular, typically political or administrative, sphere and this third definition is one that applies best to what I am sharing here: Authority is the power to influence others, especially because of one’s commanding manner or one’s recognized knowledge about something. It’s the confidence resulting from personal expertise a person with extensive or specialized knowledge has about a subject; an expert.
The word originates from the Latin auctor, meaning originator and promoter, then moved to Old French as autorite, on to Middle English as authority, and finally to English as author.
In my thinking, if you wish to be perceived as an authority you must become an author. I have now written more than twenty books and in each one I tell my story, in regards to the topic I am writing about.
Both words – autorite and authority – come from the same French word auctor, meaning creator or author. This began with the definition of “father, creator, one who brings about, one who makes or creates” someone or something.
Authority at first meant a reference to an author. Think of “he is an authority on the history of jazz”, or “he spoke with authority on the subject.” The meaning then drifted to include our present sense of command and control.
I challenge you to step into your power as an author and an authority to claim the credibility you deserve. Share your stories orally and in written form to allow others to see you from different perspectives. And be ready to become a leader in your field as more people come to know you through the art of the story you are willing to tell.
Your Voice – Your Words – Your Presence = Your Story We create authority with everything we say, do, and write
Building authority through storytelling is a valuable use of your time and efforts. This is my story:
My Story…
I worked as a classroom teacher in the inner city of Los Angeles for twenty years. I loved teaching students who appreciated the opportunity to learn English and to create a better life for themselves and their families through education. I had grown up with few resources and related to much of what they were going through as children of poverty in America. I was also working in real estate simultaneously to make ends meet for myself and my mother.
As I got older and survived cancer twice, as well as recovering from a serious work injury I dreamed of a way to be able to work fewer hours while still earning enough income. My prayer was “Heavenly Father, please show me how to work from home, from my bedroom if necessary to meet all of my financial obligations with grace and ease.”
My prayer was answered in 2005 when I discovered that people just like me were making a good living as online entrepreneurs. One year later I was able to resign from teaching and turn my real estate clients over to people who could better serve them. My life is a very different one now and I am eternally grateful for what I have been able to create. Now my life is dedicated to helping those who wish to transform their lives through entrepreneurship.
In 2007, just a year and a half after starting my online business I had this experience…
I attended my first marketing conference in the fall of 2007. It was at a beautiful “renaissance” hotel south of Los Angeles by the beach. During the weekend one of the speakers stated matter-of-factly that you couldn’t be a “player” and make any real money until you had at least 10K people on your list.
I stood up and raised my hand. When the speaker called on me I remained standing, turned towards the audience and said,
“Good thing I didn’t get that memo. I reached 6 figures a year with only 651 names on my list.”
He smiled slightly and said,
“And to what do you attribute your great success?”
My answer… “I live by a motto… “Do for a year what others won’t, live forever the way others can’t.” Once I started my year there was no stopping me.”
I received a short standing ovation, sat back down, and by the next break I understood what it was like to be a celebrity. Both men and women surrounded me, and some (both men and women) even followed me into the ladies room.
In this story I am giving examples of how to build authority using what I refer to as:
- The “Power Precept”
- Your “Power Voice”
- Your “Power Stance”
- The “Power Statement”
