Most of us are afraid to speak in public. Even though I hold teleseminars several times a week, which is a form of public speaking, I still have that fear when I get up in front of an audience. I had the opportunity to speak with Donna L. Johnson this morning about this. Donna is The Speaking Diva, and helps people to overcome their fear and to actually enjoy giving a speech or presentation.
Donna’s advice to me was simple: share your story with people so they can relate to you. She coaches others and teaches them how to prepare a speech, include a motivational message, and to become more successful in their field by speaking regularly. This made sense to me and left me with a feeling that I could be a better public speaker.
The bottom line is that you want to be honest as you speak. Do not be afraid to share your story, even if it is one of struggle and misfortune. Your audience will be able to relate to you more if they can understand that your experience is not so different from theirs. Be sure to follow me on Twitter, and follow Donna as well. That is where I connected with Donna and her great information, and you can do the same in your niche.

When I was learning presentation and facilitation skills, my mentor told me that if I ever WAS NOT nervous (a form of fear) then I should worry.
I have proven repeatedly over the years that he is right. Even 20+ years later I still get the butterflies, I use them to keep me sharp and focused, never assuming I’m beyond slipping up. They keep me grounded and humble.
Regards,
Richard

Great article – particularly the part about being honest – I think you’re right, people can tell and they appreciate honesty –
