I am finally back online after almost 24 hours without internet service at my house. Due to the recent fires and ongoing Santa Ana winds here in Santa Clarita, just north of Los Angeles, my ISP went down for the longest time in their recent history. It made me realize that I didn’t have a good backup plan in place.
Yes, I back up all of my files every day, but that is only part of the bigger picture. I hold teleseminars regularly, as well as posting to several blogs, writing and submitting articles on a daily basis, and using social networking throughout the day. This morning I had to think fast to see what I could come up with. I ended up at the office of the Farmer’s insurance agent here in town that I do some marketing for. He not only gave me complete access to his computer system, but also offered me the key to his office, if I should need to return later to complete more work. You can bet I’ll be doing some extra posting and marketing for him for awhile.
What is your plan? If the power goes out and you have online work that must be done, will you be at your local Starbucks? What other ideas can you solidify to make sure your online business doesn’t skip a beat in case of any type of emergency situation that is beyond your control?

Oooh… Starbucks!!! (fail, power – fail!!!) Kiddin’
Good post – a lot of people, myself included, may not plan for power outages. Reminders are always useful…

Connie–this is so true! We frequently have internet outages and now we have a wireless card from Verizon. Not only can we just pop on line any time the internet is down (such as today, after my husband made some changes to the system!), but when staying in hotels that charge $10 or more for daily internet, we have free and reliable access … after paying the monthly fee for the wireless card 🙂

Haah. When I moved and the internet was not hooked up, I almost lost my mind. But thank God there was a library down the street and I learned how to remotely access my email using Mail2Web.com (that was a trip). But now, I am using an external hard drive too.

Connie,
My area looses power frequently from my local electric company. I had to have a generator and a UPS for back up power.
