Marketing is an activity that can make or break your small business. Yet most businesses fail to develop an effective marketing plan that can be implemented on a daily basis. That’s right, you must have a plan to market yourself and your business and it must be done on a regular basis.
I first learned this when I came online in 2005. I had worked in real estate for twenty years prior to this, and had somehow missed the importance of becoming a good marketer. When I think back to how much money I did not earn because of my lack of skills in this area, all I can do is shake my head.
This does not have to be the case for you. You can start right now to improve your marketing skills and make a plan of action. The first thing you will want to do is to Google your name and the name of your business. I do this once a month and print out the first and second pages of results. This gives me a good idea of how the world perceives me and what I can do to affect this outcome with Google’s results.
Write down the target audience you are trying to reach in your business. Where do these people spend time, both online and offline? If they are on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, make sure you have a presence there to connect with them.
Make a list of the words and phrases people might use when searching for your business on the Internet. These are your keywords and are crucial to your business success. This will give you a jumpstart into marketing for your small business.
