An opt-in box is a form that you place on your blog or website to collect the names and email addresses of people who are interested in what you do. In the upper right-hand corner of this blog is my opt-in box. I offer people access to my free weekly teleseminars on technology and writing in exchange for their contact information.
I also have an opt-in form on my website, From Idea To eBook. When people sign up there, they receive the same exact information. But just having this opt-in does not mean anyone will actually sign up. You will need to give people a reason to join your list. If you are selling your eBook, offer them a sample chapter. You can also give them a special report on your topic, which will be anywhere from about 5 pages to 10 pages of high-quality, worthwhile information. Other possibilities are free e-courses, like my Online Writing E-Course, or an eBook written by someone else who has given you permission to give it away, like 30 Writing Tips For Ebook Authors.
Make sure what you are giving away has real value. When people see how useful and informative your free material is, they will be more likely to want to purchase from you later on. Download the examples I have given above to get some ideas for what you can use to attract people to your list.
