Why Writing Makes a Difference in Everything You Set Out to Accomplish: FAQs
I am often asked why I consider writing to be the most important and valuable skill to cultivate and improve. Whether you are an author, an entrepreneur, or a professional in any walk of life, writing makes a difference. I’m going to answer some FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) around this topic here.
Writing Allows You to Share Stories About Who You Are and Where You Came From
Storytelling is an area I am asked about regularly. As a classroom teacher for twenty years I observed firsthand what students were able to achieve once they embraced writing. From Kindergarten through high school age, my students found their voice through their written words. I will never forget the story told by Hanh, my student of Vietnamese heritage. The assignment was to write about someone they admired and she wrote about her father.
He had run away from his village and got out of the country, barely escaping with his life. His dream was to come to the United States where he would have the freedom to start a business and raise a family without fear. Hanh shared the intimate details of his struggle and the sacrifices he made so that she and her sister could grow up in a free country.
Writing Makes a Difference in Your Professional Life
People write to me and ask how writing can help them as a professional. Writing makes a difference in any career you choose. As a young law student in New York City long ago, my writing introduced me to the professors and my fellow students.
Writing Makes a Difference If You Are an Entrepreneur
Entrepreneurship requires writing and I receive many questions about this topic. I continue to say that my writing is a priority for me each day because it enables me to earn income in my online business. Beginning with a simple blog on the Typepad platform in 2006, I switched to WordPress in 2008 to get my message out to the world. To date I have published just over three thousand blog posts on my two main websites. This led to authorship and I have now published more than twenty books on the topics of authorship, entrepreneurship, and mindset shifts.
In the summer of 2019 I started a third blog, Monday Morning Mellow. I publish a new post on that blog every Monday morning that is more personal in nature. This departure from business writing has strengthened my writing practice and allowed my creativity to flow. While all of those posts are based on my real life experiences, I am also experimenting with fiction here and there. After I publish these articles on my blog I then add them to be syndicated on Medium for wider exposure.
Short reports, information products, online courses, live and virtual presentations, and full length books all require a skill and discipline with writing. One piece of writing can be easily repurposed into another and this is how you are able to work more efficiently in terms of the work products you will be able to create, publish, and sell.
Writing Paves the Way for Speaking and Leadership
Speakers ask me regularly if writing will make a difference for them. As I continued to write during my early years invitations to speak opened up for me. At first I declined because I lacked confidence in my ability to share valuable information to others. But soon I realized that I could use my writing as a foundation for my speaking presentations. Once I became a published author I began speaking about the topics of my books, and using those books to create an outline from which I would speak. Soon I began turning those presentations into online courses. The next step was hosting live marketing events and I have hosted twenty-five of these to date, as well as dozens of small group Retreats in Santa Barbara, California.
As you can see from what I am sharing here, writing will make a difference in everything you are doing and wish to achieve in your life and business. I encourage you to write every day to get into the habit of sharing your thoughts and ideas in written form.
