Now that I work online, I only fill up my gas tank about once a month. I used to fill up twice each week, so this is a big deal for me. About a year ago I realized that I could tell how successful someone was by the way they filled up their tanks at the gas station. It doesn’t have anything to do with the kind of car they drive or how much money they have; it’s all in the mindset.
There are too types of people in the world. One group is made up of people who are afraid to take risks, believe that others have it in for them, and thrive on news from television and radio. When they pull into the gas station I recognize them right away. They are angry at the cost of gas, the line they will have to wait in, and the inconvenience of having to pump their own gas. I can recognize them by the look on the face, the lack of eye contact, and the fact that these people never fill up their tank. Instead, they will only purchase ten or twenty dollars worth of gas at a time.
The other group smiles when they get out of the car and makes eye contact with me. They seem to enjoy the idea of pumpinf their own gas, and always fill up their tanks to the very top. Sometimes I get into a short conversation with one of these people, and we share where we are from and what we will be doing after we leave the gas station. They typically have music playing in their cars, and they just seem to be having a good time in general.
The funniest thing is that the first group of people are going to the gas station about twice as often as the second group, simply because they refuse to commit to a full tank of gas. They are expecting the worse, and are not surprised when things do not go their way. The second group is making their own fun, and enjoying the process of getting gas as just another part of the life experience. I can almost guarantee you that the second group is experiencing more success in their life. What group are you in? Are you filling up your tank?
